Another Week, Another Life
It's been too long... that leads to a lot of stuff to catch up on, and a ton of points.
So I guess Montel Williams came out recently and says he smokes weed, and he supports legalization of it. Mad TV made a spoof skit. No idea whom to give points for this, but it's funny to me:
My favorite news item of the week was Phil Ivey finally winning a World Poker Tour event! If he needed anything to cement his "Best In The Game" status, this was it. He has now cashed in 8 WPT events, making the final table all 8 of those times. Dude is in it, to win it. Points: +3 for his appearance on PokerRoad Radio and +5 for winning the L.A. Poker Classic.
Basketball Life:
TNT Thursday night basketball had a big, playoff preview game this week in Dallas vs. San Antonio. It lived up to expectations, going down to the wire with the crowd in it the entire way. But what the hell was Avery Johnson thinking? In the game's deciding offensive possessions, he benched Jason Kidd! Speechless. Normally this would earn negative points, but since it facilitated a Spurs win, +5! Avery earns an addition +1 for his in-game talking. Dirk Nowitzki was his usual, non-clutch terrible self. He was flopping around and failed to score twice down the stretch while being guarded by Tony Parker! Unacceptable. It infuriates me every time I think about him winning MVP. -10.
The second game was a much less compelling match-up -- Lakers vs. Heat. I always love watching Lamar Odom, though, and earned +1 for a great pass in the lane. Dwyane Wade was a highlight as well, as he's clearly still putting forth the effort, despite his injury-racked body and his team's terrible season. As Reggie Miller sort of hated on him, he came up with a tremendous play, falling on the ground but still keeping the possession alive (+3) and he showed a little feistiness, getting into it with the annoying Sasha Vujacic, +3.
Other points on the basketball night: Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan +3 and +1, respectively, for their play vs. Dallas, Doug Collins and Marv Albert +3 each for announcing work, and Ernie, Kenny and Charles +4, +4, +6 for their Inside The NBA studio work.
Carolina got a scare on Saturday, as they try to march towards a #1 seed in March. Tyrese Rice of Boston College was absolutely out-of-his-mind on fire, scoring 46! He had something like 23 in the first 5 minutes, which is insane. Since Carolina went on to the 10-point victory, I can give him some positive life points -- +7. Carolina points: Quentin Thomas +1 for really assisting his big man, quickly finding Psycho T's contact when Hansbrough lost his contact early in the game. Ty Lawson +2 for getting back on the court, and Hansbrough +2 for his usual relentlessness.
Kristin and I went to the Clippers/Pistons game (good look on the tickets, Everis!) Saturday, and the amount of Pistons fans there was amazing. I don't think I recall a better road show-up crowd at the Staples Center. Billups and Wallace jerseys were everywhere, chants of "Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-troit Bas-ket-ball" rained down, and every time Rasheed touched the rock, an emphatic "'Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed" was heard. Those fans were not disappointed, as it was a Pistons rout 103-73. The best part was seeing the pre-game Rasheed dance live and in person. It's even better live! +5. Other points on the night: Tayshaun Prince +2 for 10 assists, handling point-forward type duties with no Chauncey Billups, Jason Maxiell +1 for oops, and Walter Hermann making the crowd go wild during garbage time with his weird, Dr. J-like one-handed lay-ups, +2.
Other b-ball points: LeBron's dunk near the end of Sunday's early game +2, Hubie Brown +4 for great analysis
Great article on Chris Paul in ESPN the Magazine -- makes me like him more and more. +6
Lost Life:
Best Lost episode ever? Possibly. Looking at the series as a whole, Desmond is probably one of my favorite characters. All of his flashbacks/flashfowards/time shifts raise all types of possibilities and interesting discussion. His relationship with Penny is easily the most interesting love story. All-and-all, he is awesome. This episode touched on all of that. How great was the editing of his and Penny's phone call at the end? Overall great. Points: Sayid +2 for scoping out the scene on the boat, Jack -1 for his stupid pocket tee, Daniel Faraday +5 for being awesome, Jack -5 for being an idiot, DF +1 back at Queens College, Desmond +5, Penny +5 -- love moments, Sayid +3 for fixing radio.
One Tree Hill Life:
The most recent set of episodes from Season 4 that I watched were tremendous. One episode clearly had to have been written by a different set of writers, as there were one-liners popping out everywhere. Here's a taste of dialog between
Dan and Deb:
"I thought vampires had to be invited in."
"And I thought water melted witches. Yet here we are." That is awesome! +1 to Deb and Dan.
There's other good lines like that, great story twists, and everything you could hope for in a teen soap! Ha. Here are the points:
Mouth +1 for acting like a blithering idiot, and Skills +1 for his idea on how to get Nathan some quick cash -- enter a male stripper contest! Lucas' mom, Moria Kelly, +1 for saying Lucas has had "the hots" for Peyton. All the kids had to do impressions as part of a school project -- funny. Mouth +1 for his Dick Vitale impression, Lucas +3 for a bunch of different ones, Nathan +1, and Haley +1 (don't remember whose theirs were of). Rachel -6, bad person for trying to bring Bevin down with her. Mouth +1 for scoring a hot chick. Boom. Skills got a scholarship! +6 Goth-ass Lucas +1, Peyton for taking the high road and signing over her artwork to Brooke, +1. Haley +3 for laying the smackdown on Rachel and throwing a drink in her face. A rare but good Nathan and Brooke moment, +1 each, and then an even better moment! Boo-ya! Who knew it was foreshadowing an awful event to come... Peyton BOOM! in Brooke's face! +3. Nathan with the pep-talk! +1.
Miscellaneous Life:
Friday I had a Feist marathon, catching up on all of her albums. I like the newest one the best, but they are all solid. +5 to her.
Asante Samuel +5 for joining the Eagles.
Mary-Kate Olsen. +2
Mischa Barton. +1. Awesome.
