Just A Few Days In The Life
Pure, random mess o' stuff in this edition.
TV Life:
I burned through the third disc of One Tree Hill, Season 4, and it contained one of the better episodes of the entire series, in the State Championship Game episode. The director/creator created a nice little mis-direction that led to a bit of an emotional roller coaster of sorts. Too bad Rick Fox's character had to die though. The points:
Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) +1, Gigi (Kelsey Chow) +1, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) +5 for picking Peyton and +5 for the game-winning shot in the state title!!!! And props to the makers of the show, as they shoot some pretty realistic basketball scenes. Skills (Antwon Tanner) +3 for his play in the game. Nathan (James Lafferty) gets downgraded to -5 for throwing the first half. Dan Scott (Paul Johansson) +4 for taking an L for his son, and going to jail, even though the whole world knew the autopsy was going to say Rick Fox's character died due to the accident, and not as a result of Nathan punching him.
The latest Wire was disappointing... I won't say exactly why, as to not ruin it for others. Here are the points: Omar +3, that stupid little kid -10, Snupe +3 for being so damn gangsta, while talking to Michael, McNulty +4 for being profiled as the serial killer! Ha. Clay Davis, +4, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Lester +2 for the restaurant scene and Gus +3 for FINALLY pulling Scott's card.
I saw a little bit of the most recent SNL. I loved the Keenan-hosted game show "What is that bitch talking about?", something like that. Ha. Kenan Thompson +2. I also saw a birth control ad spoof, which was hilarious and some of the Weekend Update. Tina Fey +2, Amy Pohler +1, Seth Myers +1.
Jon Stewart for the Roger Clemens recap show and the post-Oscars show -- +6.
The most recent Rob & Big episode (sacred G? super G?) wasn't as good as most, but it had it's funny moments. +3 to each.
For a recent PTI, Michael Wilbon +1 for the hot pinstripe suit/sweater outfit, and +2 to both him and Tony for grunting at end, ala female tennis players.
Poker Life:
Poker Road Radio is back for the L.A. Poker Classic, and without Bart Hanson! Thank god. The first couple shows featured old hosts Scott Huff and Joe Stapleton, which was awesome. Haralabos, who has not been that entertaining on Big Poker Sundays, was back to his hold hijink amongst a bigger group. One of the funnier parts of the show was a new segment called "Pot Odds" (with a definite play on the word "pot"), with Eugene Todd. He is funny as hell, in a natural, just being himself kind of way. Then, in the most recent show, brand new host Ali Nejad debuted, and... what a relief! A million times better than Bart. Point run down: Haralabos Voulgaris +4, Eugene Todd +3, Scott Huff +2, Joe Stapleton +2, Gavin Smith +4, Joe Sebok +3, Ali Nejad +1.
Although he only lasted two episodes in the most recent Poker After Dark, +1 to Daniel Negreanu for mentioning Vlad Tepes! His parents were born in Romania, and he has, in fact, visited the Dark Prince's castle.
Basketball Life:
Ralph Lawler has been up to his usual antics in recent Clippers broadcasts, for a total of +4. One of those broadcasts featured the injured Shaun Livingston, and he is great on the air, +1.
Al Thornton's recent play: +1.
Leon Powe did something that I now forget... +1.
As a result of Andris Biedrins' appendectomy, Brandan Wright has started twice! Despite only playing in college 1 year, he's one of my all-time favorite Carolina players. +4.
Stephen Jackson flew in a bunch of kids from Port Arthur, Texas, his hometown, to a recent Warriors game. Awesome. +3.
Lamar Odom +1 for his recent Eat Your Breakfast moment on Joel Przyzbilla.
Greg Oden +1 for his most recent blog entry. He doesn't get the points because of his Obama support, but because of the funny "paid vacation" comment, and overall writing.
Allen Iverson +1 for a swooping lay-up last night -- a thing of beauty.
Movie Life:
I finally watched 16 Blocks, OnDemand. Mos Def "most definitely" stole the show. He did a great job playing the witness guy, even though his voice was annoying as hell. That was the point though! The one dumb thing was how they kept calling him a kid. Not only do I know for a fact that he is a grown-ass man, he doesn't even look close to being a kid in the movie. Anyway, +5 and +3 to Bruce Willis for his acting. The rest of the acting was horrid, especially the man bad guy.
Music Life:
I've been trying to catch-up on some older stuff I had downloaded recently, including Dr. Cornel West's Never Forget: A Journey Of Revelations - an overall solid album. West is one of intelligentsia's greatest Hip-Hop proponents, and he uses this forum to show how he thinks Hip-Hop can be used best. The mix of soul and Hip-Hop results in some good stuff. Another similar academic, Michael Eric Dyson, makes an appearance as the debate the use of the N-word. I love hearing these two talk. I could listen all day. +5 to Cornel West and +3 to Dyson.
