The Weekend In Life
Friday Night Lifes:
Friday involved a little hanging out and watching basketball, then playing poker and listening to music. A ton of games were going on simultaneously, and the best one ended up being a Sacramento/Charlotte OT affair. The one I was looking forward too -- Boston at Phoenix -- ended up being a 85-77 clunker. They lost, but the C's proved they can really junk up a game, defensively.
I won a $30 H.O.R.S.E. tourney for ~$800 later on, and then had 2 beers (that = drunk!) to celebrate. When I drink, I love music. My discovery of the night was Thin Lizzy, a band featured in a Miller Lite commercial. "Tonight there's gon' a be a jail break", [duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh], "Somewhere in this town". Awesome. I don't know all the details, but +7 to any still living members of Thin Lizzy.
Other hits on the night included:
Akon really breaks it down on Wyclef's "Sweetest Girl". "You don't knoooooow, wheter or not to lay low, 'cause 25-to-life is no joke". +5.
Ghostface's "Holla" Are you serious? it can't be better than this. Classic material. +10.
Pharrell is really, really doing it on "Cheers". The ode to Miami is sick. "They took pie paper and built skyscrapers." +5. ?uestlove claims in a recent interview that P is coming back with a vengeance on the new N*E*R*D project, and his verse here seems to back up that idea.
OutKast. No other words needed. "Andre, this is Andre, ya'll just gonna have to make amends". It's him and I, Aquemini. +10 for Andre 3000.
Kanye's Grammy Family verse is so sick... part of the reason it's near the top of the play count list in my iTunes. +7.
Speaking of... I would definitely give up valuable stuff in order to know my life time play counts of music. Money? Years off my life? Maybe even my magazines? Ha. Seriously... I would love to know life time music and movie counts. I would think the all-time movie count leader would have to be Rad... and that's rad!
Saturday Life Live:
Saturday was awesome, as I finally tapped into Kristin's inner video game fiend! After rocking out to Thin Lizzy all night, I had the revelation the next morning -- time for Guitar Hero! So we went to the Westwood Best Buy, picking up delicious chicken cheese steaks along the way. Before getting our strum on, though, we went to see No Country For Old Men. Then, it was time to shine. Kristin actually played way more than me, as I had a little work to finish up, and it was fun to watch her play. First time she's ever touched the PlayStation, as far as I can remember!
As for the movie, we both liked it. That villain is one of the most villainest ever, I'd have to say. Out of the Best Picture nominees, I only saw this and Michael Clayton, and they are actually very similar in a lot of ways. The one very odd thing I find about both, is that they are both very asexual. I can't remember any sexual innuendo in Clayton (other than perhaps the crazy guy's naked meltdown?), and No Country keeps it to a minimum as well, with Llewellyn talking about screwing his wife, early on, and then another lady coming onto him a little bit, outside a hotel in El Paso.
Point rundown: Coen Brothers +5, Tommy Lee Jones +3, Javier Barden +3, Josh Brolin +3, Garret Dillahunt +2.
Sunday Life:
Oscar day! Kristin and I were going to hold our first Oscar Party, with Colleen and Jamie coming over, so that was exciting. The full Oscar Life review will be in another post. As we prepared and cleaned, I put all N*E*R*D songs on random... great stuff. +5 to Pharrell and Chad Hugo. Before the show, Carolina held off Wake for another Tywon-less victory, and it was an easy one. Psycho T showed his usual animal-ness, +3, QT balled out with 7 assists, +3, Wayne Ellington had some beautiful plays, +2, and I liked Alex Stepheson's hustle, +1. The day ended on a frustrating note, though, in my Poker Club. It was the last night, and I had to win the night's tourney to make the Playoffs. I got down to the final 3, got all-in with the best of it 2 or 3 times, and nothing held up. Damn.
Miscellaneous Life:
Jin's open letter to Obama, +2.
Bill O'Reilly talking about lynching in relation to Michelle Obama! Awesome! Why is this not a bigger deal? -10.
Danieal Negreanu's most recent blog is funny. +3.
I heard some of The Coup this weekend... +3 to Boots Riley.
And last but not least, Bill Simmons gets +3 for his various columns of late.
