This, That And The Third

It's been awhile since I updated everyone on life happenings, so this sucker is gonna cover a lot of ground, potpourri-style.

Points From The Past:

Earlier in the week, I caught a couple of shows while converting old VHS tapes to DVDs.  First, oddly enough, I have the 12th annual American Music Awards, filmed in 1985, on tape!  Wild.  Lionel Richie hosted, and stars of the day included himself, Cindy Lauper and Prince.  Who knew that "Black Music" was actual category back then?  What does that even mean?  Were black opera singers eligible?  Classic compositions?  Well, Prince won "Favorite Black Male", if that counts.  Did you have to even do music to qualify for that?  Nowadays, at least on wikipedia, these awards are listed as "Soul/R&B".  Hmm, shady.  +1 to Richie, +1 to Prince and -1 to Lauper.

Another gem on this tape was the cartoon: Garfield on the Town.  Awesome.  +3 to Garfield.

Ads:

A couple of updates this week from me and my partner at irateads.com resulted in points.  First, I got around to rating one my favorite recent campaigns -- Messin' With Sasquatch.  Great.  +5 to Sasquatch.  Jim reviewed a Vitamin Water campaign, and I had forgotten about the Tracy McGrady spot.  T-Mac in a kilt = +2.  Nice block.

Movies:

I watched a couple of movies this week.  After hearing my guys on Two Jacks In The Hole talk about how great The Zodiac was, I noticed it on one of the movie channels and watched it.  Hmmm... I now wonder if they were being sarcastic.  It was a boring, cliche, predictable movie.  It even included the obligatory "forgotten birthday by busy cop-father" scene, but this time the father forgot his own birthday!  Weird.  I didn't know about the Zodiac killer though, so the pure information aspect evens things out for director Alexander Bulkley.  To get the full scoop on the actual facts, check this out.  I was going to give Robin Tunney +1 for looking good in the movie, but then I saw her horrid IMDB photo!  Damn.

I also saw Idlewild for the second time -- still entertaining!  +3 to both Big Boi and Andre.

TV:

And you know I watched some TV this week.  The biggest even, of course, was the season premiere of Lost.  I loved it.  Great unintentional humor from Jack, great unintentional and intentional humor from Hurley, some awesome quotes from Rose and Ben, and the obligatory unanswered questions.  Scoring recap:  Jack -5 (although I did love when he missed all those jump shots), Lance Reddick, Lieutenant Daniels from The Wire, appeared in Lost as a mysterious man asking Hurley questions in the mental hospital, +1, Rose +1 for her great quotes regarding Clair getting freaky and Locke being crazy, Ben +2 for his quotes, Sayid +1 just for being Sayid and Hurley +4 for his Hurley-ness.

I saw a couple more Rob & Big episodes, both classics in their own right.  In Poop In The Pool, well, Rob finds that someone pooped in his pool!  This leads to an investigation, interrogation, and the purchase of a security system.  The best part, though, was the purchase of a net gun!  Awesome.  Rob shoots everyone with the net gun, and the first time when he gets his assistant, it is great.  +5 to Rob, +1 to Big.

The other episode was Meaty Goes To Hollywood.  And while Meaty does get +1 for becoming the face of Dick Van Patten's dog food, the Rob & Big portion of this one is my favorite.  First, if you've never seen a Kashi Good Friends cereal box, go check it out.  I first saw these a couple years ago, in the grocery store, and have loved them ever since.  What a feel-good marketing campaign!  Rob & Big feel the same way when they discover them, and as they too are an interracial friend-couple, they want to be on the box!  Awesome.  They try to get on the box, and hilarity ensues.  +5 each.

I missed this controversy the first time around, but +3 to Dave for apologizing to Miss Hilton.  He had previously also written a letter, called her and sent flowers.  Also, +3 to Paris for looking resplendent in that yellow dress, and for getting the better of a neutered Dave with her comeback comments.  Her film The Hottie And The Nottie?  Hmm... probably not.

Basketball:

I watched less basketball than usual this week, but found point moments, nonetheless.

Thursday night, Boston held off the Dallas Mavs for a 96-90 victory.  During the final few minutes bitch-ass Dirk failed to box out munchkin point guard Rajon Rondo for a key rebound.  Typical Dirk.  I'm ashamed to like NBA basketball when I think about him winning the MVP award.  -3 to thim and +1 to Rondo.  After one of Boston's final baskets the cameras cut to a funny Scot Pollard celebration.  +1.  During the broadcast Avery Johnson was miced up, and I wish I had more.  +1 for what I did hear, and +1 for his black funeral home director suit!  The best part of TNT's broadcast that night, though, was the teaser for a new T-Mobile ad to be shown over All-Star Weekend.  Hilarious, especially the Barkley echos!  +3 to Wade, Barkley and if I knew who he was, the announcer guy.

I randomly ran across this video of Scot Pollard and Stephen Jackson at a golf charity event during their Indiana Pacers playing days.  Who new Pollard would get multiple points in one day? +1 each for their antics in this video.

Politics:

During the most recent democratic debate, Hillary threw out a great one-liner along the lines of "It took a Clinton to clean-up after the last Bush, so it will probably take another."  It can be seen in this YouTube clip.  This clip misses the best part though, as it cuts off too early.  Hillary is SO thrilled with herself!  The look on her face afterwards is priceless.  +3.

Miscellaneous:

Mystic has an album coming out with her group, This That and The Third, and here is the promo.  +2 to her.

Mariah Carey, caught looking good.  +1.

+1 to both of the Two Jacks In The Hole hosts, Joe Stapleton and Scott Huff.

Hey, I heard your mention on TJITH and just want to save you if you haven't seen Zodiac yet. I don't mind "boring" movies, but I do mind when they don't make you use your brain. Kind of a blockbuster with no action. The Lookout is much better, but I wouldn't recommend that one either.
